The Challenge
In health care, it can be very difficult to capture costs accurately or efficiently. So when MMCWM was looking to identify cost per procedure and conduct profitability analysis based off these costs, they looked to Plante & Moran's Health Care Consulting team for help.
“Without a costing system, facilities are unable to efficiently identify direct or indirect costs associated with each procedure and therefore, do not know true profitability of the services they perform,” says Jim Mahoney, Plante & Moran senior health care consultant.
The Solution
Plante & Moran recommended that MMCWM use EPSi’s cost accounting software which contains the resource costing application and a product line analysis tool. EPSi's decision support tools allow for accurate and efficient development of costs at the procedure level and then give organizations the ability to analyze profitability on a number of levels such as product line, payor, or physician.

The Results
Kerri Nelson has been so pleased with EPSi’s cost accounting software that she’s recommended that MMCWM adopt EPSi’s budgeting software, which includes both an operating and capital module, as well as integrated reporting module. “I’ve seen the functionality of it and have been very impressed,” says Nelson. “We plan to begin using it in the next fiscal year.”
