GAST can help
when your finance operation needs support
The Plante & Moran Government Accounting Services Team (GAST) combines its experience and expertise serving governments to support cities, villages, townships, counties, and other government-related entities with the right kind of help for a project or continuing assistance. The following are some recent examples of how local governments drew on the experience and expertise of Plante & Moran’s GAST professionals:
Crisis Accounting Assistance
The state began withholding revenue sharing money because the city was a year late filing its financial statements. City employees did not know where to turn. Historically they had done the financial statements, but this year they were struggling with new reporting standards. Along with a number of other accounting-related matters, their annual required financial statement filing was late.
The answer to their dilemma – the Government Accounting Services Team (GAST) from Plante & Moran. Accustomed to government work and experts in the generally accepted accounting standards for governmental units, GAST completed and filed the required statements within one month. The city received its withheld revenue shortly after.
Temporary Accounting Assistance
When a small city lost its treasurer, the community leaders knew they needed temporary assistance until they could fill the position. They contacted the Plante & Moran Government Accounting Services Team (GAST).
An experienced professional from GAST maintained the accounting records of the city, prepared the city for its annual audit, filed required reports with the state, and streamlined the accounting process.
To ensure a smooth transition, the Plante & Moran professional also trained the new treasurer and, over the next 18 months, continued to serve as a resource for additional training and help with year-end reports and audits.
Permanent Accounting Role
A city was facing a crisis when its city manager called in Plante & Moran’s Government Accounting Services Team (GAST). There was constant turnover in the finance director position, the city’s accounting model was not working, and the auditors could not begin their work because they did not have the necessary records.
The GAST professionals were able to get the records in order and complete the audit.
The city decided to keep the team on. GAST works a few days a week to provide timely, accurate accounting records for the city government. The team also oversees budget preparation, audit preparation, and other external reporting requirements.
