New “Greener” Office Improves Collaboration and Provides Room for Growth

GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan —
The Grand Rapids office of Plante & Moran, PLLC has moved into new offices that will better facilitate team collaboration and its ability to serve clients.

The accounting and business advisory firm has signed a lease for new larger and “greener” office space at 634 Front Ave. NW, Suite 400. The move, which was completed recently, preserves the downtown presence of one of the largest accounting firms in West Michigan while providing room to support its continuing expansion to meet the needs of its growing client base in West Michigan and across the country.

As part of Plante & Moran’s commitment to sustainability, the firm designed its new office space with a significant number of green features, such as energy-efficient utilities, on-site recycling and related attributes. The firm is seeking Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED certification, for commercial interiors and expects to know the results by February 2009.

Additionally, the firm donated a significant number of office furnishings, from tables and chairs to computer stands and bookcases, to The Potter’s House School in Grand Rapids, where they will enjoy a useful second life.

“Transitioning to this new space will allow us to enhance our ability to grow and to more effectively and efficiently serve our clients,” said George Riddering, office managing partner of Grand Rapids. “Our new offices are configured to enhance our collaborative team environment and to improve workflow and productivity.

“We have also made a significant investment in “green” products and processes, reflecting the importance that we – and our clients – place on the principles of sustainability. Additionally, we have built in a number of special features, including enhanced technology and improved communications, to serve our staff and clients now – and well into the future.”

The new workspace will feature office space for Plante & Moran’s 112 staff members, with room to accommodate future growth. To encourage efficiency and collaboration, staff members will be clustered around the firm’s seven industry focuses: manufacturing, health care, financial institutions, real estate and construction, service industries, private equity and public sector.

The new offices also feature state-of-the art technology for communications and conferencing, a new training center that will accommodate staff and client sessions and enhanced security offerings.

The new office building, which was built by The Christman Companies to LEED specifications, allowed tenants such as Plante & Moran to utilize environmentally friendly products, materials and building methods, including:

  • A “white” roof that will reduce energy usage and the urban “heat island” effect
  • Selection of water-efficient plumbing fixtures, which will result in a 40 percent reduction in water and sewage usage
  • Use of highly energy-efficient heating, ventilation, cooling, lighting and water systems to minimize environmental impact
  • Recycling of 50 percent of all construction waste, thereby diverting it from landfills
  • Use of locally made and recycled materials to minimize transportation and energy costs
  • Direct access to windows in more than 75 percent of occupied spaces
  • Use of a “green” housekeeping program to protect the health of occupants and the environment
  • On-site recycling of paper, cardboard, plastic and other materials

“We are very pleased with our new space,” Riddering said. “The move coincides with our 20th anniversary in Grand Rapids – and our 85th anniversary as a Michigan-based accounting and business consulting firm. We look forward to growing in West Michigan for many years to come.”
