Plante & Moran Receives Top Workplaces Recognition

Additional Special Award for Top Leadership Also Goes to Firm

SOUTHFIELD, Michigan — Plante & Moran, PLLC, one of the nation’s largest accounting and business advisory firms, was named one of the top five workplaces in Michigan in the 2010 Detroit Free Press Top Workplaces survey. The state-wide survey looked at companies in small, midsize and large categories; Plante & Moran was named number three in the large companies category.

Plante & Moran has a tradition of workplace success, receiving numerous workplace awards through the years, including the coveted national award from FORTUNE magazine, which has named the firm one of the country’s best places to work for 12 consecutive years. Speaking on the Detroit Free Press award, Plante & Moran Managing Partner, Gordon Krater, CPA shared the firm’s approach to workplace satisfaction with the newspaper.

“We need to be profitable, but we want to do it the right way, maintaining our culture and making investments in our team for the future,” explained Krater. “We mentor, we train and help our staff members advance. If you don’t have anyone who cares and has vested interest in you, all the little perks don’t matter.”

Plante & Moran has a human resource infrastructure that supports individual and team development. Longstanding as well as newer policies and practices reinforce the firm’s culture and team spirit, and further the ultimate goal of maintaining the firm’s reputation for outstanding client service. Highlights include:

  • The assignment of a team partner and experienced staff member to serve as a “buddy” beginning on the first day of employment to encourage and sustain long-term relationships among staff and promote professional development and personal satisfaction
  • A nationally recognized professional training program that now includes social media venues to help ensure effective networking and relationship building with current and future clients and friends of the firm
  • A PTA (Personal Tightrope Action) Committee that researches and recommends programs and policies that address and support balance of life issues; examples of PTA programs include a PTA buddy program for first-time parenting staff and on-site child care on Saturdays during tax season.
  • Firm-wide volunteer initiatives, including paid time off, to support community efforts

As part of the Detroit Free Press Top Workplaces award, Plante & Moran was selected as the winner of Top Workplace Standout in the large company leadership category. The leadership award was given to Plante & Moran based on responses to the following criteria statement: “I have confidence in the leader of this organization.”

The leadership award is especially notable because Managing Partner Gordon Krater took over the reins of the firm in July 2009, at the height of the national recession, and has continued the firm’s traditions of being staff-focused and client driven.

“We have great people at Plante & Moran and I consider it an honor and a privilege to lead them,” commented Krater. “Collectively, we never lose sight of our clients’ needs and that continues to be a guiding principle, regardless of economic times.”
