Plante Moran Hosts ArtPrize Sculpture with Environmental Theme

Grand Rapids, Michigan, September 8, 2011 – In its first year as a venue, CPA and consulting firm Plante Moran will host the artwork of Carl Goines during the 2011 ArtPrize competition.

Goines is a sculptor and nonprofit arts director in Detroit who is collaborating with Monte Martinez. Their piece, Spawning Helix, is a “sculpted double helix spiraling up from the ground that morphs and evolves into organic fish like forms that are large in scale.” The piece, which stands 13 feet tall and 18 feet wide, is part of a series of work addressing and bringing attention to watershed issues.

Appropriately, the sculpture will sit outside the LEED-certified Plante Moran building overlooking the Grand River and Grand Rapids Fish Ladder Park. Installation will begin next week.

“We are incredibly pleased to join ArtPrize this year and look forward to bringing the conversation across the river,” said Rich Antonini, managing partner. “Our building is a perfect venue for Carl’s and Monte’s work, which is designed to raise awareness of critical environmental issues. We hope that ArtPrize visitors will have the opportunity to explore a new part of downtown when they cross the bridge and come to Plante Moran.”

This is Goines first time entering the ArtPrize competition. He and Martinez run a non-profit arts center in Detroit called 555. The center provides artist studios, educational arts programs, exhibition space, a residency program and public arts projects.

ArtPrize, an international art competition in Grand Rapids decided solely on a public vote, returns on Sept. 21-Oct. 9 for the third year. Part arts festival and part social dialogue, ArtPrize attracted submissions from more than 1,800 artists – and tens of thousands of supporters – from around the globe.
