: Plante Moran Partner Joe Heffernan
has received a very distinguished honor: the Michigan Government Finance Officers Association’s (MGFOA’s) Honorary Life Member Award. This award is given to those who have made an outstanding contribution in the area of governmental finance and accounting. Established in 1938, the Michigan Government Finance Officers Association is a professional association of public officials and finance professionals, striving to promote excellence in government finance.
Joe has more than 30 years of experience, and is a nationally recognized governmental accounting expert. He has served as chair of the Accounting Standards Committee for the MGFOA since 1991.
Joe’s involvement with government organizations has spanned not only MGFOA but several other key roles. Joe has been an appointed member of the Michigan Committee on Governmental Accounting and Auditing since 1985. He currently is an invited member of the American Institute of CPA’s (AICPA) State and Local Government Expert Panel (a panel of national experts that publishes the Audit Guide for State and Local Units of Government). He has also served on the AICPA’s Government Audit Quality Center Executive Committee, and the Governmental Technical Subcommittee.
Joe is in charge of professional standards for Plante Moran’s public sector group and his responsibilities include oversight of auditing and accounting guidance for the firm’s municipal, school, higher education and single audit practices, which together total more than 755 financial or single audit reports issued annually.
