Are You Prepared for a Changing Reimbursement Environment?
Consult Plante Moran’s Cost of Care Benchmarking Tool

Whether single-site hospitals or large, multi-campus systems, healthcare providers across the continuum are preparing strategies to conform with and succeed within a changing reimbursement environment. To gauge your position in comparison to the total cost-of-care trend, we invite you to use our Cost of Care Benchmarking tool.
The Cost of Care tool focuses on seven key metrics. Within the data grid are historical values for U.S. healthcare expenditures related to population and gross domestic product for 2003 through 2011. Use this data to inform your estimates for the next 20 years. Based on your input for the values in the “User” column, the data will be projected out through the year 2035.
As indicated in the “Current State” column, the trend for healthcare expenditures as a percent of gross domestic product is ever increasing and projected to reach 23 percent by 2031. This is a 5 point increase over 2011. In comparison, the next highest industrialized nation is 12 percent. This assumption is a key driver of the analysis and provides the framing mechanism for an organization’s strategic perspective.
Depending upon your assumptions, you may see significant changes in how the industry will need to deliver and staff healthcare services in the future. You may see a need to focus on efficiency or redundancy of services, since the total cost per capita is untenable.
Input your perspective, and print off each graph using the printer icon at the top left of the table.
Our Cost of Care application is designed to illustrate the often quoted idiom, “Our current healthcare reimbursement system is unsustainable.” Consider this a first step in preparing your organization for the future.
