There’s been some hope among business owners that policy changes coming out of Washington may affect the implementation dates surrounding revenue recognition. Because the revenue recognition rules stem from the Financial Accounting Standards Board and aren’t under the jurisdiction of the federal government, that is not the case. Revenue recognition will happen as planned in 2018 for public companies and 2019 for private companies. That may seem like a ways off, but there’s significant complexity in the new rules—complexity most business owners aren’t anticipating.
