Headshot of Kathy Downey

I was born in Detroit and have lived in Illinois only 11 years. This is why I’m such an avid sports fan of the University of Michigan, the Detroit Tigers, and the Detroit Red Wings. Because I’m in Chicago, I’m also a Cubs fan. I’ve been around so long, I actually knew Frank Moran!

Experience

I specialize in providing audit, tax, and general business consulting to large, complex clients in the not-for-profit, service, and manufacturing industries. I also serve a wide variety of higher education institutions. Clients remember me for my direct communications, and they rely on me to execute strategies that help move them forward in their mission.

My reputation for effective leadership and my investment in the growth of our office are what led to my role as office managing partner in Macomb and, today, Schaumburg. I’m proud to be a part of the Plante Moran tradition of recruiting and developing excellent staff who will shape the vision of the office within the context of our firm culture.

I’m often asked to speak at client board meetings on topics of board governance and business strategy.  As a member of Plante Moran’s Women in Leadership Committee, I also present on issues facing professional women. I have a B.S. in accounting from the University of Detroit.

I’m happiest spending time with my family, golfing, and watching college sports. I love traveling, especially if it’s away from the Midwest when winter in Chicago has reached its breaking point.

I’m a member of the AICPA, the Michigan Association of CPAs, and the Illinois CPA Society. I also serve on the University of Illinois Accounting Department Advisory Board, the Board of Executive Advisors of the Northern Illinois University Business School, and the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce. Over the course of my 36-year career, I’ve also served on multiple hospital and chamber boards.
