Flint Community Schools celebrates construction of first new building in more than 50 years

October 3, 2025 / 1 min read

A landmark investment in Flint Community Schools, The Cube shows how strategic capital planning and community collaboration can advance educational equity.

Congratulations to Flint Community Schools on the ribbon cutting of The Cube, the district’s first new construction project in more than 50 years. As part of a $40 million investment supported by the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation and federal Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund (ESSER) funds, The Cube represents a bold step forward in educational infrastructure and community engagement.

Nestled between Brownell STEM Academy and Holmes STEM Middle School, The Cube is regarded as a powerful symbol of renewal for Flint Community Schools. This 5,000-square-foot facility was designed with versatility in mind, featuring adaptable meeting spaces, vibrant interiors, and modern technology to support a wide range of programming. From senior services and adult education to after-school enrichment and neighborhood gatherings, The Cube is built to serve every generation.

Programming is led in partnership with the Flint Center for Educational Excellence and the Brownell-Holmes Neighborhood Association, reflecting a shared commitment to community engagement. The facility’s extended hours and multipurpose design make it a true anchor for the surrounding neighborhood.

The broader campus transformation was shaped by a co-design process that invited input from parents, students, staff, and residents. This inclusive approach gave rise to a space that mirrors the aspirations of the community it serves. The ribbon-cutting ceremony, attended by Governor Gretchen Whitmer and other local leaders, marked not just the opening of a building, but the beginning of a new chapter for Flint’s north side.

The district has made additional campus upgrades across its footprint, including a new early childhood center, renovated classrooms and gymnasiums, redesigned parking and playgrounds, and athletic facilities for football, soccer, pickleball, basketball, and track.

At Plante Moran Realpoint, we were honored to support this transformative project by working with the district to oversee the high-level budget, construction activities, and owner coordination. We’re proud to have played a part in bringing this historic moment to life — alongside architectural engineering firm Stantec and construction management firm Clark Construction Company.
