Southfield, Mich., Sept. 8, 2025 — Plante Moran, one of the nation’s largest audit, tax, consulting and wealth management firms, is pleased to announce that Stephen Eckert has been appointed practice leader of the firm’s National Tax Office.
In his new role, Eckert will lead a team of tax experts responsible for delivering innovative strategies to help clients improve their tax positions in an ever-changing business and tax environment. The National Tax Office serves as Plante Moran’s center for advanced technical tax knowledge with expertise in structuring merger and acquisition transactions, navigating complex federal tax issues and accounting method planning, engaging on tax controversy matters, and providing strategic insights on tax legislation and emerging trends.
Eckert succeeds Partner Michael Monaghan, who led the National Tax Office since its inception 15 years ago. Monaghan now serves as the firm’s Group Tax Leader of Specialty Tax Practices where he oversees the firm’s specialty tax practices (National Tax Office, State and Local Tax practice, International Tax services, Tax Transaction Advisory Services, Tax Solutions Group, Tax Controversy and National Corporate Tax).

Eckert received his Bachelor of Arts in political science from the University of Notre Dame, his Juris Doctor from the Chicago-Kent College of Law and his Master of Laws from the New York University School of Law.
