”Experience
I lead Plante Moran’s Tax Controversy Services practice where our members frequently represent clients before the Internal Revenue Service and the IRS Independent Office of Appeals. I also practice in the firm’s National Tax Office, focusing on unique and emerging issues. Additionally, I serve as the firm’s Assistant General Counsel for Tax Matters. I am licensed to practice law in the State of Michigan and numerous federal courts including the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, but my practice of law is limited to the representation of Plante & Moran.
I’ve helped clients reduce their tax liability by millions of dollars through a close review of federal tax law and the advice I’ve given. I’ve also successfully helped clients obtain full or substantial concessions from the IRS in connection with many disputed matters.
I have more than 25 years of professional experience as an attorney and certified public accountant, including experience gained with a Big Four accounting firm. Prior to joining Plante Moran, I practiced as a trial and appellate attorney with experience in nearly 20 jury trials and 40 cases before the Ohio’s Court of Appeals and Supreme Court. I received seven favorable jury verdicts against Fortune 500 opponents, and a landmark decision from the Supreme Court of Ohio that drew national attention. In addition, my legal and statistical research was utilized by the United States government in a Medicare fraud case to obtain an eight-figure settlement. Outside the courtroom, I’m also a past-President of the Miami Valley Trial Lawyers Association where I served on the board for several years.
While practicing law full-time, I received a Masters of Tax Law degree from New York University after graduating from law school ranked fifth in my class. I was a tax law professor for several years before arriving at Plante Moran, and I was one of the original test reviewers for the Uniform Certified Public Accountancy Exam.
In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with friends and family, reading the Bible and its commentaries, and playing chess.
