Experience

I’m an accredited actuarial consultant and the leader of the actuarial practice within our employee benefits consulting group. I specialize in defined benefit pension plans (DB) for clients across all industries, small Cash Balance Pension plans, multiemployer plans, and employee stock ownership plans (ESOP) with clients often in the construction industry. Additionally, I provide consulting services for all benefit plans.

My work involves de-risking pension plans for single and multiemployer plan sponsors through bulk lump-sum windows, retiree lift-outs, full-plan terminations, and contribution and investment strategies. I also work with small companies and sole proprietors on deferred tax strategies by setting up DB pension plans, such as cash balance plans. Additionally, I consult regarding withdrawal liability (feasibility, replacement plans, negotiations, etc.) with Participating Employers of Multiemployer Pension Plans. For ESOPs, I work directly with feasibility and repurchase liability studies and on plan administration.

I was attracted to this career because of its ongoing challenging and changing work environment. My clients appreciate my all-around knowledge of the actuarial practice and that I’m able to communicate these concepts in a way they understand. Around the office, I’m known for my love of spreadsheets and woodworking.

In my more than 22 years of professional experience, my greatest accomplishment was gaining full actuarial pension credentials. I belong to the Society of Actuaries, Joint Board of Enrolled Actuaries, and the American Academy of Actuaries. I received my B.A. in mathematics and statistics, with minors in finance and economics, from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.

When I’m not helping clients, I enjoy spending time with my family, biking, attending my daughter’s swim meets, and serving on the parent board for the North Oakland Waves YMCA swim team. As a woodworker, I use slabs and lumber I sawmill myself to create custom furniture for family and friends.
