Headshot of Ginger Powell

I rowed with the University of Iowa women’s rowing team and, after college, with Chicago’s Lincoln Park Boat Club. I loved being on the water and travelling to races — Head of the Charles in Boston was my favorite!

Experience

As the leader of our firm’s R&D tax credit practice, my goal is to help clients save tax dollars by identifying tax-saving opportunities. I specialize in tax incentives for organizations performing new product development and/or engineering activities, primarily in the manufacturing industry (automotive, tooling, plastics, and food and beverage) or software development companies and new technology startups. Additional expertise includes 199, IRS exam defense, tax consulting, payroll tax credits, employee retention credits and specialty tax services.

I’ve always loved science and originally planned to study chemistry. But, I knew that working with people was what energized me — and I was surprised to find that accounting was a good fit. Then, early in my career, an opportunity to help on an R&D tax credit project presented itself became hooked when I found I could work with both science and accounting. I joined the firm in 2012 when our tax solutions group was only a handful of people, and I was the first team member in Chicagoland. Since then, I’m very proud that we’ve grown the team significantly — in the region and across the firm.

I enjoy presenting at technology and manufacturing industry association events, as well as internal trainings. I belong to the AICPA and the Illinois CPA Society. I received my B.S. in accounting from the University of Iowa.

With a seven-year gap between my daughters, much of my free time is spent with family. We’re lucky to have many relatives nearby. We enjoy various activities with the kids — of which camping and swimming are favorites.
