My not-for-profit clients are mission-driven. When I can assist them with their audit, tax, and business needs, they’re free to focus on their passion — whether it’s people, animals, the environment, or giving back and assisting their communities — instead of worrying about accounting and finances. They appreciate that I recognize this. I also work with closely held manufacturing and distribution companies to help minimize their taxes paid.
As a former office managing partner and current team partner, I make a significant investment in my team members. They recognize me as someone who’s always willing to help them work through personal and professional challenges. I’ve worked with firm leadership to expand the firm’s recruiting efforts for Michigan State University graduates. I’m happy when any of my staff achieve success in the firm — even if they aren’t MSU grads.
I was attracted to this career because of the variety. It’s been over 31 years, and I still appreciate that my workload isn’t entirely predictable: different clients, different responsibilities, and different days. It’s what keeps me coming back.
Professional accounting organizations and client boards often ask me to speak on NFP industry topics. I’m a member of the AICPA, the Michigan Association of CPAs, and the ISCPA. I am an advisory board member of Baker College and Lawrence Technological University. I also serve on the boards of Sweet Dreamzzz, Northville Community Foundation, the March of Dimes, the Skyline Club, and the Huron River Hunting and Fishing Club. I’m a public accounting advisor to the Accounting Practices Committee of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.
